Why Does My Ankle Hurt?

Looking at Ankle Pain in Point Cook and Yarraville

Ankle pain can be caused by a multitude of problems, in this blog we will look at exploring soft tissue injuries and more specifically, a common reason for pain in the outside of the ankle called the peroneal muscles.

The peroneal muscles are a group of 3 muscles that work to protect the ankle joint from ankle sprains and work to keep your foot in an optimal position during running and walking. Peroneal muscles can be inflamed in the tenon or muscle belly and often present as tendonopathies or painful taught bands of muscles called trigger points.

The painful symptoms usually occur in the outside of the foot, outside of the ankle or outside of the shin. Diagnosis is usually made in the clinical chair although occasionally tests such as ultrasounds are ordered to help confirm the diagnosis or help to set expectations and goal setting.

Treatments can include: Orthotics, bracing, taping, footwear, strengthening/ rehabilitation, exercise prescription, dry needling and soft tissue massage. Generally treatment plans consist of a variety of these treatments to address the cause as well as assist in healing of inflamed tissue.

As ankle pain can be caused by a multitude of problems, we recommend medical advice and assessment by a professional, to book online at one of our local clinics, please click here for online bookings with a Podiatrist in Point Cook or Yarraville
