Do you have foot or ankle pain? Shockwave Therapy may be your answer!
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a treatment that has been used for over 20 years in various branches of medicine. It involves using sound waves to deliver high-energy shockwaves to painful tissue, promoting healing, improved tissue function, and ultimately reducing pain.
At TFC Podiatry, we incorporate shockwave therapy as a vital component of your treatment plan. We aim to ensure your long-term mobility and freedom from pain.
What to expect from Shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a valuable treatment method for addressing injured tissue, facilitating healing, and enhancing long-term tissue function. The term “shock waves” refers to acoustic sound waves, which are experienced as a deep tapping sensation rather than a jolting impact.
The intensity of shockwave therapy is determined collaboratively by you and your practitioner. This approach ensures that the treatment intensity is appropriate for tissue repair while prioritising your comfort.

What does the procedure involve?
Shockwave therapy is conducted by our qualified Podiatrists. It uses a pneumatically powered hand piece to generate shockwaves, which are transmitted to the site of injury. At the start of the journey you will be given a diagnosis and treatment plan. This treatment plan is guided to suit your individual needs and goals. Shockwave therapy may fit into this treatment plan, if it does here are a few notes on how it works!
The treatment session uses 2,000 – 3,000 pulses per area of treatment. Each area takes around 3-10 minutes and intensity can be varied significantly. Most patients will notice some pain relief immediately post treatment.
Intensity of treatment can be varied to ensure that the right balance is reached between delivering enough energy to encourage results without being too uncomfortable. In order to receive the most benefit from the treatment, we often recommend multiple sessions of shockwave therapy. This will depend on the injury and goals of treatment but usually varies from 4-6 sessions.
