What is dry needling?

Dry needling for foot and leg pain.

Dry needling is used for musculoskeletal injuries which occur secondary to trigger points in muscles. Podiatrists use dry needling for a range of conditions affecting the lower limb. Such as heel pain, plantar fasciitis, ankle pain, leg pain and much more.

Dry needling involves inserting fine acupuncture needles into trigger points (taught bands of muscle). The aim of treatment is to increase local blood flow, release muscle tension and initiate an immune response. Dry needling is an excellent adjunctive therapy often used in conjunction with other treatment modalities such as stretching, strengthening, orthoses and footwear modification.

This treatment modality has had particular success in recent studies undertaken for the treatment of plantar fasciitis. Our Podiatrists have undergone additional advanced training in the use of dry needling.
